Ruhlin | The Safety Culture

“Safety starts with me and it continues with each and every one of us, so let's be safe out there!”
       -Jim Ruhlin, President & CEO

At The Ruhlin Company we believe in a safety culture that promotes employee commitment, accountability and involvement. It is our culture to work safely and not endanger ourselves or others. We are continuously improving our safety program and conduct regular safety checks of our projects. Employees in every area of the company are given safety training regularly and are required to follow all safety procedures, at all times. To us, safety is of the utmost importance which is proven through our commitment to implementing our safety program.

In order to keep everyone involved and up-to-date on new programs, initiatives, hazards, or other safety topics, we send out a monthly safety newsletter "Safety Ruhles”. This newsletter is included with every employee’s pay stub. In each issue of “Safety Ruhles” we include a topic that discusses safety on the job and safety at home. After all, safety does start at home.

Ruhlin Safety Team
As a commitment of our dedication to continuously implement and improve our safety program, we chartered a Core Safety Committee in March 2006. Their mission is to promote Safety Program commitment, accountability and implementation. Our Core Safety Committee consists of
• Our President/CEO
• Division Management
• Project Managers
• Equipment Manager
• Safety Manager

The Ruhlin Safety Program is not only developed, maintained and communicated through the eyes of management and the Core Safety Committee, we have also developed a Field Team Safety Committee. The Field Team Safety Committee is comprised of:
• A field representative from each trade
• A Ruhlin field supervisor
• Our Safety Department
• Our President/CEO

This committee is in place to help communicate ideas for implementing and improving safe work place practices to all employees in the field and for management to receive suggestions and feedback from our field employees to help improve our program.

Ruhlin Employees & Safety
Employee accountability, commitment, and involvement help to assure a safe workplace and work place practices in all aspects of our operations. A safety program cannot succeed if each and every employee is not committed to a safe work place. From senior management to the carpenter swinging the hammer, all of our employees are held accountable for their actions toward safety, whether negative or positive. All Ruhlin employees receive the following training:
• Safety Orientation when hired
• Annual Safety Training at company winter conference
• Supervisory field employees are required to complete an OSHA 30-hour course and attend an approved refresher course every three years
• Other field employees are required to complete an OSHA 10-hour course

Safety Incentive Program
We want every Ruhlin employee to be involved in our safety program; therefore, we encourage our employees to submit suggestions to improve our safety program. There are two ways suggestions can be submitted,
1. If one employee sees another employee going above and beyond for safety, they can submit that employee’s safe actions into a monthly drawing via our Safety Incentive Program (S.I.P.) Form.
2. The same procedure above can occur if an employee recognizes a hazard and abates that hazard before an injury occurs.
3. Everyone is encouraged to submit new safety ideas via our S.I.P. Form

The 3-R’s for Safety

Responsibility to Stop Work Every employee has the responsibility and authority to stop work IMMEDIATELY without fear of reprisal, when convinced a situation places themselves, their coworker(s), or the environment in danger. “Stop Work” is defined as the stopping of a specific activity that poses a danger to human health and/or the environment.

Report Unsafe Conditions
Employees are expected to report any activity or condition which they believe is unsafe.

Right to a Safe Workplace
Any employee who reasonably believes an activity or condition is unsafe is expected to stop or refuse to work without the fear of reprisal and request that the safety concern be addressed.

*If you have a “Stop Work” issue that has not been resolved through your supervisor, contact the Safety Department.
